The action follows reports that peanut seeds being produced and distributed by several companies were of inferior quality and allegedly infected with aflatoxin fungus, a toxic contamination that scientists have classified as carcinogenic. According to officials, the contamination poses a significant health risk and has raised alarms over the safety standards being followed in the production and storage of agricultural seeds.
Dr. Kirori Lal Meena personally joined agriculture department officials during surprise inspections in Chomu, where peanut seed manufacturing companies came under scrutiny. Authorities carried out raids targeting low-grade and poor-quality seed stocks amid allegations that fungal infection in the seeds could lead to serious diseases.
The investigation also comes against the backdrop of mounting allegations that several consignments of Rajasthan’s peanut exports were halted overseas due to quality concerns. Exports to Indonesia and several European destinations were reportedly affected after contamination and quality-related objections surfaced.
During the investigation, the Agriculture Minister alleged that two companies had entered into Memorandums of Understanding with the previous Congress government and continued producing seeds even after the stipulated time period had expired. He warned that strict action would be taken against those found responsible for violations and irregularities in seed production and distribution.
The raids have intensified scrutiny over the quality control mechanisms within Rajasthan’s agricultural supply chain, particularly in the peanut seed sector, which plays a crucial role in both domestic farming and international exports. The unfolding investigation is expected to have major implications for seed manufacturers, exporters, and regulatory authorities across the state.
